Test and opinion of the Oniris oral orthosis
Contents of the box
- 2 lower gutters (standard and large size)
- 2 upper gutters (standard and large size)
- cluster bars (used to adjust the offset between the lower and upper jaw)
- A transport box
The principle
Snoring is due to a relaxation of tissues in the pharynx. Thus causing a narrowing of the air passage and snoring.
Moving the lower jaw forward frees up the passage of air and limits or eliminates snoring. Sleep apnea can also be linked to this narrowing, so the orthosis can partially solve this problem. It remains essential to consult a doctor who will be able to determine, using a polygraph, the number of apneas per hour that you have (with and without the orthosis).
If the result is conclusive, the quality of sleep and in particular deep sleep will be improved.
Adjustments and customization of the orthosis
You must first choose the size of the gutters that best suits your mouth (standard or wide). Then plunge them into a bowl of boiling water for 2 mins 30 mins. Take them out, wait 15 seconds, then position them without your mouth, clenching your teeth, for 2 minutes. Thus, they will adapt to his teeth.
Then, it will be necessary to position the bars between the 2 gutters. Test the ones that distance the lower and upper jaw the most, without however bothering you. The greater the gap, the greater the chances of success.
Adaptation time
Sleeping with something in your mouth is not easy. However, you have to persevere. Over the nights, you will get used to it. You can, if you wake up and it bothers you, take it off and then go back to sleep. After a few weeks, the discomfort will disappear.
Results
It works. You can use a sound recording app overnight:
For example, Snoreclock:
The decrease in sound level was very significant for me: from 35% to 5% with the app data (i.e. -85%). And for apnea, after passing the polygraph from 30 apneas per hour to 20 (-33%).
Comparison with a custom-made orthosis in an ENT specialist
The custom-made orthoses, made following impressions made in the office of his ENT, are based on the same principle. They are finer. The “embarrassment” is therefore reduced.
However, they cost much more, around €300 (partially reimbursed by social security every 2 years, but this information may change, find out…). And the lead time is about 3-4 weeks.
You will be asked for a certificate from your dentist, in order to verify that you do not risk, by wearing these orthoses, a loosening of your teeth (you should already know this, because no additional test has been carried out at my dentist).
Conclusion
After a fairly broad comparison, the Oniris orthosis is for me the best quality-price-result ratio.
Really a good product that I recommend to those who suffer from snoring and sleep apnea. Not very expensive, easy to “install”, and of good quality (apart from the somewhat fragile transport box that I broke after a few days). I rectify and do not remove a star for the 2 negative points below, because the price is very competitive and this remains a detail with regard to the result obtained.

Note :
- Price
- Quick lead time
- Quality product
- Convincing results
- Robustness of the transport box
- A little less thin, so a little more “discomfort” than a custom orthosis
